Review Score:

Drox Operative is a fast-paced action RPG that is based in outer space. It’s an in-depth space simulation with massive environments to inhabit and galaxies to explore. Before you can plunder the galaxy for minerals and riches, you must decide what race your character will be. There are ten different races; each race has its own strengths and weaknesses.

As mentioned earlier, the environments are massive and allow the player to explore just about anywhere they wish. You control your ship simply by using the standard (WASD) key configuration along with the mouse. The combat is your typical twitch-style shoot’em up gameplay that relies more on your gaming skills than rolling dice in a turn-based environment.

While combat is based on action and gaming skills, the scavenging portion of the game is real enjoyable and feels more like other games from the strategy genre. You can spend hours exploring the galaxy while scavenging for garbage and wreckage located in different solar systems. Some items, referred to as components, can also be found in the parts you collect in space. Components can consist of shields, tractor beams, hulls and even thrusters.

These components can be used to craft new items or even upgrade your spaceship. In fact, Drox Operative’s gameplay focuses heavily on developing  your ship.

After winning a battle, experience points can be used to customize your attributes and stats. How you decide to use these points is entirely up to you, but whatever you choose will affect different skills such as tactical, helmsman, structural, engineering, computers and command.

One thing Drox Operative is not short on is the different types of weapons you can attach to your ship. There are nine different ‘standard’ weapons you can choose for your ‘load outs’ to protect your ship. These weapons include the EM, freezer, missiles, virus varieties, bombs, and beams.

The most sought-after weapons are the Doomsday weapons. These weapons are very rare and difficult to find, but when used they can destroy things with a single shot. These are considered the most deadliest weapons in the galaxy and they are capable of wiping out entire factions.

The environments are rife with endless minerals, materials and other resources for gathering and even trading. Drox Operative offers infinite possibilities and limitless replayability.

At first glance, the in-game graphics look simplistic, but on closer inspection you will notice the attention to detail (especially on the ships) is extraordinary. Bright, colored nebulas and wormholes exist inside the empty void of space and they are nothing short of breathtaking. Even engaging your enemies in combat will light up the darkest corners of space.

The game also offers extensive cooperative online multiplayer features that includes a chat system, trading abilities and player status. Drox Operative is a unique rogue-style game with action-based elements. It has the right balance of action and role-playing to make it stand out among the rest in the genre.
